    Description

    What is over-molding process?

    Overmolding is a specialized, multi-step injection molding process where a second material (typically a softer plastic or rubber) is molded directly over and bonds to a pre-existing substrate part, called the substrate or first shot, to create a single, integrated component.

    How It Works (Two Common Methods):

    • Two-Shot (2K) Molding:Done in a single machine with a rotating mold. The rigid substrate is molded in the first cavity. The mold then rotates or shifts, aligning that substrate into a second cavity where the softer overmold material is injected directly onto it. This is a fully automated, single-cycle process.

     

    • Insert Molding (for Overmolding):The pre-molded substrate is placed into a second mold as an “insert.” The overmold material is then injected around it. This can be done in the same machine or a different one.

    Key Materials:

    • Substrate (Base Layer):Usually a rigid plastic (e.g., ABS, Polycarbonate, Nylon).
    • Overmold (Top Layer):Typically a soft, flexible material like TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer), TPU, or silicone rubber.
